Excitement mounted as Russia and Greece won the women’s and men’s events at the BNP Paribas World Team Cup European Qualifications in Antalya, Turkey on March 26, 2016. The BNP Paribas World Team Cup is the wheelchair tennis equivalent of the Davis Cup and Fed Cup. It is held annually with a different nation playing host each year.
Russia qualified for the women’s World Group and Greece qualified for the men’s World Group II. For the third time in the past four years, Greece has won the men’s European Qualification.
In 2013, Greece defeated Israel in the final. The competition continues every time the teams meet. Although Greece had secured victory three years ago, the most recent competition found Greece having to go to the deciding doubles after two one-sided singles matches.
Greece earned top seed with a 2-1 victory over Israel in a battle that involved players Stefanos Diamantis and Giorgos Lazaridis. The players had an excellent opening set in the deciding doubles but still had to get through the second set tiebreak, which they did with the closing score 62-76 (3).
Colombia, China, and Morocco who are winners of the previous regional qualifications, will join Greece in the men’s World Group II for the 2016 BNP Paribas World Team Cup.
Russia repeated history from the 2014 final against Italy, sealing top seeding in the women’s event, winning the European Qualification for the second time in a three year span. Players Ludmila Bubnova and Viktoriia Lvova ensured a 2-0 win during the women’s final for the fourth year in a row. In the 2014 European Qualification event against Italy, Ludmila Bubnova shared the honors with Marianna Lauro in two three set matches.
However, this time, Bubnova won with a 67 (2) 61-64 score while coming through a hectic three set contest. By the final score, Bubnova had a career head-to-head record against Lauro with five wins each.
Team members for Russia and Greece are dedicated to their sport and have their eye on the win. It will be a competition filled with excitement and competitiveness that will surely reach new heights.
The players are now training for the 2016 BNP Paribas World Team Cup which will be held in Tokyo, Japan May 23 through the 28th. The competition will be fierce with each player bringing their best skills and effort to the game.
The ITF, also known as the International Tennis Federation, announced the 2016 BNP Paribas World Team Cup will be hosted at the Ariake Colosseum by the Japan Tennis Association. Although Asia hosted the 2012 event in Seoul, Republic of Korea, this marks the first time a BNP Paribas World Team Cup will be hosted in Japan.
The Ariake Colosseum in Tokyo will also be the venue for the 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Tennis Events. The Chairman of the Japan Tennis Assoication International Committee, Nao Kawatei stated: “We are pleased to host the BNP Paribas World Team Cup in Tokyo. Japan is a long-time supporter of ITF wheelchair tennis.” Players attending the event will have the chance to showcase their talents before the 2016 Rio and 2020 Tokyo Paralympic Games.
